About Birmingham

Birmingham was founded in 1871 at the crossing of two railroad lines in the Jones Valley. The city grew fast because iron ore, coal, and limestone were all close by. These three raw materials are what you need for steel. By the early 20th century, Birmingham was a major industrial center known as "The Pittsburgh of the South."

Today, Birmingham has transitioned from its industrial past to a diverse economy centered on healthcare, banking, education, and technology. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is one of the largest employers in the state, and the city is home to several major financial institutions and corporations.

Birmingham played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the 16th Street Baptist Church are important historical sites that attract visitors from around the world.
